At Murphy International our vision of accountability and sustainability, embed within our core business strategies, is that sustainable development by definition is development using sound environmental practices to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We participate in many markets that are critical to long-term sustainability.
Our core corporate mandate and objective is to comply with all environmental policies, laws and regulations and to establish leading edge system-wide improvement for current and future activities. By using, conserving and enhancing the community's resources so that ecological processes, on which life depends, are maintained, and the total quality of life, now and in the future, can be increased is the basis which Murphy International employs for aligning our business strategies to sustainable development in all our projects.
Our growing recognition is that we have to look beyond economic progress to achieve sustainable societies and that Sustainable Development must be ecologically sustainable. We understand that improving life is not possible without a clear understanding of, and sensitivity to, the effects of our business operations on the world around us. The days when for-profit corporations seemed to exist exclusively to maximize profits or shareholder value are behind us.
Today, our Mission compels us to consider and address the interests of customers, neighbors, employees, governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), as well as stakeholders in everything we do. Murphy International progressively has taken actions to contribute to the goal of sustainability by aligning our policies with those of the United Nations. Working globally, the UN developed an action plan for sustainable development – Agenda 21. This plan was adopted by many governments at the "Earth Summit" - in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992. We agree with these governments that economic and social progress depends on base ecosystem services and a healthy environment. We believe that development also implies an improvement in the quality of life through education, justice, community participation, and recreation.
In summary, Murphy International’s development plan identifies and integrates critical factors necessary to achieve and maintain an effective environmental management program in our business operations. The program begins with policy and planning, moves to implementation and evaluation, then corrective actions, all of which are reviewed by senior management. Our program and policy includes key compliance program elements as defined in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Guidelines, ISO 14000 Management System Standards and other key regulatory management programs. It is a process that drives the company toward continuous improvement where;
Maintaining strong relationships with our communities is a priority and is covered by our policies. Our communities often tend to be smaller in size and our project presence is often very significant. We interact closely with local businesses, governments, community groups, and individuals both collectively as a company and individually as members of the community. To ensure that our local operations reflect our global commitments at the bottom line, we pursue community sustainability at each of our operating sites. There is no universal prescription to achieve the sustainability “ideal” in every community. However, by maintaining ongoing dialogue with community members, we are learning how we can best contribute to improved quality-of-life in each community where we operate.
By establishing these strategies Murphy International is committed to helping to drive both the supply and demand for green renewable power services and products while assuring that the best interests of the consumer and communities are met. It is a clear case of a win-win-win model that has been utilized and proven successful by Murphy International in communities across the US and around the world.
